Leicester - UK knitwear firm BS Attwall has closed after more than 50 years of trading after failing to find a buyer for the ailing business with the loss of 48 jobs.

The Leicester-based flat knitter, which supplied sweaters, T-shirts and sweatshirts to several high street customers including Tesco, River Island and New Look, lost a number of key customers to overseas competition and was unable to replace the business.

A spokesperson for accountancy firm Mazars said it would no longer be looking for buyers for the company as it had already ceased trading before Mazars was appointed as administrator.

In 2013, BS Attwall announced the creation of 130 new jobs in knitting, design and garment production following a new factory deal in Leicester. At the time, the company bought a 130,000 square foot factory in Humberstone, Leicester.
