Toray launches ‘luxurious’ polyester filament

Tokyo – Toray Industries has unveiled Aurlist, a new polyester filament fibre engineered for high-end womenswear, combining luxurious lustre with gentle loft and a subtle fibrillated surface.

Targeted applications include women’s tops, skirts, and dresses, with Toray forecasting sales of Â¥130 million in fiscal 2026, rising to Â¥200 million by fiscal 2030.

Positioned within the Toray Premium Gousen Select range, Aurlist is produced using the company’s Nanodesign conjugate spinning technology, which enables ultra-fine fibre diameters of around one micron – approximately one-tenth that of silk.

The process allows precise control of ultra-micro fan-shaped cross-sections and multiple ultra-fine triangular segments, each with differing shrinkage behaviour. This morphology generates a distinctive raised-fibre effect, volume, and a soft, brushed hand, while complex diffuse reflection imparts an elegant, rayon-like sheen.

Aurlist is based on two polymers with contrasting shrinkage and lustre characteristics, optimised through Nanodesign spinning to overcome the limits of conventional composite fibre production.

The technology allows resins with specifically targeted properties to form composites with stable, high-precision cross-sectional profiles, improving consistency in bulk production. For fabric developers, this translates into controllable bulk and drape, along with surface interest that is difficult to reproduce with standard polyester filaments.

Despite its micro-scale fineness and fashion-oriented aesthetics, Aurlist is  said to retain the easy-care performance associated with polyester filament yarns.

The fibre offers wash durability, dimensional stability, and wrinkle resistance, enabling designers to create premium garments that combine appearance and practical performance.

Toray expects the new filament to enhance the design latitude of knitters seeking high-value, differentiated fabrics for the women’s apparel market, particularly where soft touch, subtle texture, and controlled sheen are key selling points.
